Q: What is this?
A: This is the official website of NEC PC-9800 Central, created and maintained by me, spaztron64. It's main purpose is to provide an information platform for all of the knowledge and resources gathered since the early 2010s.
One of the largest problems being faced from then to now is the increased dominance of and dependency on messaging platforms provided by big tech companies, Discord included.
Enough time has passed to know that putting everything on the line by relying on them 100% is a ticking time-bomb threatening to erase all of the efforts the community has worked on in an instant.
Not helping matters is their generally unpredictable moderation practices, and as such it's due time to break away from them as much as possible.
Q: Why the wait for so long?
A: The idea for an official website has been attempted several times at this point, but hasn't materialized due to various factors.
Leadership disagreements in the early days, shuffling online and real-life priorities, lack of time, inexperience, and the inability to consistently finance the necessary resources (VPS, DNS, etc.).
Most of these are now either eliminated or largely reduced, though that doesn't guarantee a frequent flow of new information to the site. I'll try my best, of course, but please keep in mind that this is
run entirely out of good will and passion, and nothing else. All the bills are paid out of pocket, after all.
Q: Who's to say you won't pull the plug at any moment too?
A: Precisely nothing, which is why I actively encourage every visitor of the site, especially frequenters, to archive and mirror everything.
Once enough content for the site gets uploaded as a sort of baseline, I'll try to mirror everything directly from the server on a semi-regular basis. I'll just have to figure out an automated mechanism to leverage that.
Q: What's with the ancient looking design of the site?
A: Personal preference, for starters. It should be obvious that I have an appreciation for the kind of UI design language that was birthed from the likes of Windows 95.
It doesn't end there though, as there are also practical reasons. First thing you'll notice is that there's zero client-side scripting.
It's a personal policy to keep any kind of JavaScript and similar code out of the picture, unless absolutely necessary. As this site really boils down to a collection of document and files,
there is zero reason to be running unnecessary scripts. Also, at times it can be very convenient to view documentation and download resources directly on these old systems, so keeping resource usage
down to a minimum is of the utmost importance.
Q: Most of the links on the sidebar don't lead anywhere. What gives?
A: The site has only just been created. One man can't write all of the planned pages in the span of a busy day or two ;). I'm also waiting for community feedback on what should and should not be included.
